When the Sun Comes Back (And Leadership Shows)

If you’ve ever lived through a Michigan winter, you know.

The kind where the sky forgets how to be blue.

The kind where weeks pass without sunshine.

The kind where the cold hurts your face even when there’s no wind.

Winter here can be beautiful… but it can also be heavy.

This past week, though? Sixty degrees.

And I cannot even begin to tell you what that did for my soul.

While Lucy was at her Homeschool Connection program, I seized that warm-up like a woman rescued from hibernation. I clipped on three leashes and took all three of my fur boys out for a walk.

And it was glorious.

But as we walked — sunlight on our faces, snow melting into little rivulets along the sidewalk — something else struck me.

Gratitude.

Not just for the weather.

Not just for the fresh air.

But for the training.

Because here’s the thing:

My dogs did not magically wake up obedient one day.

They could easily be pulling me in three different directions. They could be lunging, zigzagging, straining against their leashes.

Instead?

They walk steadily at my side.

Calm.

Happy.

In control.

And because of that, our walks are joyful instead of stressful.

That didn’t happen overnight.

It took time.

Patience.

Consistency.

Love.

Clear leadership.

Discipline rooted in trust.

And as I walked, I couldn’t help but smile because it reminded me so deeply of motherhood.

Dogs — just like kids — thrive when they know who the leader is.

They don’t want chaos.

They don’t want confusion.

They don’t want to be in charge.

They want clarity.

They want security.

They want someone steady at the helm.

Scripture reminds us:

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” — Hebrews 12:11

Peace.

That’s what I felt on that sidewalk.

Not tension.

Not frustration.

Not correction every three steps.

Peace.

Discipline — when rooted in love and consistency — produces peace.

Not just in our homes… but in our hearts.

Now, don’t misunderstand me — my dogs are not robots. Not every day is perfect. Not every walk is flawless.

But because of consistent training over time, we have far more good days than frustrating ones.

And I see the same pattern in raising children.

Because of consistency, clear expectations, and loving correction, I have far more wonderful days with my kids than hard ones.

Discipline — when done with dignity — doesn’t suppress joy.

It creates it.

If my dogs weren’t trained, our walk would have been exhausting and tense — for me and for them. Instead, we got to enjoy each other.

That’s what leadership does.

When the structure is solid…

When the expectations are clear…

When love and authority walk hand in hand…

Everyone relaxes.

Everyone thrives.

And suddenly, a simple 60-degree day in February feels like a gift layered with even deeper gratitude.

Sun on my face.

Leashes loose.

Three happy dogs at my side.

And a reminder that consistency today builds peace tomorrow.
